Scents of Christmas - Fresh Pine: The Scent of the Christmas Tree Week 2

Walk into a room with a fresh Christmas tree and you immediately know what season it is.

That crisp, green, slightly woodsy fragrance is one of the most recognizable smells of Christmas. Even people who use artificial trees often find themselves searching for pine-scented candles, sprays, or fresh greenery because something about that evergreen fragrance makes Christmas feel complete.

Why Evergreens Became Part of Christmas

Evergreen trees have long symbolized life during the darkest, coldest months of the year.

While other plants lose their leaves, evergreens stay green. Over the centuries, people brought branches indoors during winter celebrations, and eventually decorated Christmas trees became one of our favorite holiday traditions.

Today, varieties such as fir, spruce, and pine each bring slightly different fragrances into the home.

Some smell crisp and forest-like. Others are sweeter or more citrusy.

But all of them have that wonderful outdoors-at-Christmas quality.

Bringing the Forest Indoors

A Christmas tree isn't the only way to enjoy fresh evergreen fragrance.

Fresh wreaths are wonderful on doors, while garlands can be draped across mantels, staircases, and tables.

You can also place a few evergreen clippings in a vase. Add pinecones, berries, or ribbon and you have an easy Christmas arrangement that smells wonderful.

If you have an artificial tree, tuck fresh evergreen branches around the room instead. You get the convenience of your reusable tree and the natural fragrance of real greenery.

That Christmas Tree Memory

For many of us, the smell of pine is tied to the ritual of putting up the tree.

There's untangling the lights, opening boxes of ornaments, finding decorations you had completely forgotten about, and wondering how you managed to pack everything so badly last January.

Then there are the ornaments that bring back memories—the handmade ones, the slightly battered favorites, and the ones that have somehow survived decades.

All of that happens around the tree.

No wonder the fragrance becomes part of the memory.

Make Pine Part of Your Christmas

Bring home a wreath. Gather a few fresh branches. Decorate with pinecones. Light a forest-inspired candle.

You don't need to turn your living room into a woodland cabin.

Just a little evergreen fragrance can make an ordinary December evening feel wonderfully Christmasy.
