Julie L. Cleveland, owner and artist at Blue Morning Expressions, has been presented with the opportunity to provide 75 bracelets for the swag bags given to the celebrities attending the GBK New York Fashion Week Luxury Lounge in New York City, New York on September 6-7, 2013.

These bracelets have been completely handmade, which includes the brightly colored beads with loads of handmade flowers. They are strung with Swarovski crystals, and they are wrapped in organza before being added to the swag bags by the team at The Artisan Group. The Artisan Group is an elite selection of artists and designers that present gifting opportunities to their members.

In addition to the Fashion Week, Julie is participating in the 2013 GBK Primetime Emmys Gift Lounge. She has offered 10 pairs of earrings specifically designed for the gift bags that will be presented to the members of the press attending the Emmys. Her earrings consist of colorful, teardrop shaped, handmade beads and finished with Swarovski crystals. She is also including her business card in the celebrity swag bags that are part of the gift lounge.

Julie works in polymer clay, which is a plastic material that has all the properties of modeling clay. Her beads are all created by hand, and they are then used to create one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry. She has been working in this medium since 2004, when she had the opportunity to view a book on flowers in polymer clay. She was immediately hooked on the medium and has been working primarily in the creation of polymer clay canes. These canes use the same principle as millefiori glass canes that are used in glass pieces such as paperweights and other large pieces.

The millefiori, which means a thousand flowers in Italian, is built by placing clay or glass in specific areas of the design while looking down upon the design. The result is a design or flower that will be the same all the way through the piece of glass when pulled or reduced to a smaller size. This is the same principle that is found in the Pillsbury slice and bake cookies that are available during the holidays. This type of work requires patience and the ability to see a design from all angles before starting it.

Julie uses the flowers and designs that she creates from the clay to enhance handmade round beads that are also created from polymer clay. She uses her beads as small canvases where she creates gardens filled with flowers, leaves, butterflies and even a bee or two. These beads can be any shape or size that she needs for the project at hand. The smaller beads, 10mm or less in size, are used for earrings and charms. The larger beads are used for necklaces and bracelets.

Julie chose polymer clay because of its versatility and vibrant colors. The properties in the clay give it the unique ability to mimic other materials. Polymer clay can be used to create faux turquoise, lapis, stone, amber, ceramics and coral. If there is a gemstone, there is a way to recreate it in this medium. The medium is also used for sculpting and doll making. Julie has had her beads and sculptures recognized in several bead and jewelry magazines, in addition to a magazine devoted to the medium. She is a member of the International Polymer Clay Association. She is a member of the Self-Representing Artists in Jewelry Design.

Because she creates all of the beads herself, the jewelry and other creations are exclusive to her and Blue Morning Expressions.

Julie is a Space Coast Florida resident who is currently visiting Bozeman, Montana while enjoying the cooler weather.

Julie sells her colorful beads, the raw polymer clay canes for other bead makers and her finished jewelry online at www.bluemorningexpressions.com. She also has a small retail space at the Gallatin Valley Mall in the Simply Montana, LLC shop.  The bracelets and earrings that were gifted to the press and the celebrities are available in her online store and in the Simply Montana, LLC shop.

Her handmade shop is a nominee in Martha Stewart’s American Made 2013 contest.

Julie is a Pekin, Illinois native and the daughter of Jerry and Susan Carson of rural Pekin, Illinois. She is married with one son and one dog.
